This issue of Puddler offers a peek at a variety of bird nests and how they're built. It also follows a family of mallards as the ducklings hatch and the hen leads them to water for the first time.

Birds are master nest builders. They make use of numerous materials to build nests of all sizes and shapes in all kinds of places. Spring is the time to watch birds at work on their nests and to hope for a glimpse of young once they hatch. Other animals build nests in spring, too.

More About...From Shell to Shore”
Like all waterfowl, ducklings hatch with a full set of feathers and the ability to travel and feed themselves within hours. A mallard hen has the tough job of caring for the eggs until they hatch and getting her brood safely to water. The first day of a mallard ducklings' life is anything but easy, as this story illustrates.
