Special
Feature Lesson:
What
Is It?
Overview:
Students
apply what they have learned about waterfowl identification to write a
field guide entry for an imaginary duck.
Curriculum Focus:
science
language
arts
art
Materials:
What
Is It? printout
drawing
utensils
several
field guides
Activity::
Make enough copies
of the
What
Is It? printout for
each student to use. Review Special Feature as a class. Ask students
to share examples of waterfowl (or even other birds) they are familiar
with, and to give examples of field marks or behaviors that help to identify
each example. Tell students they will have the challenge of creating an
imaginary duck and a field guide entry to help identify it.
Pass out copies of the
What
Is It? printout. Review
the directions as a class. Encourage students to refer to an actual field
guide to choose information to include about their imaginary duck, as
well as language to describe it. Share students' finished printouts as
a class.
Extension idea:
Photocopy
the students' finished printouts. Arrange the original drawings on a table,
but cover up the field guide information below each drawing with a sheet
of paper. Read the copy of each field guide description, and challenge
students to identify the duck that matches each description.
