Hearing faraway sounds can save an animal from danger it can't see, touch or smell. Animals also send many messages with sound—I like you, I don't like you, I am afraid, I am part of your family—to name a few. Animals have developed some special tricks to boost their hearing ability. Large ears and bowl-shaped heads help collect incoming sound waves. As a result, animals hear sounds people often don't—ones that are very soft, very far away, or very high or low. Of course, some animals that hear well don't have ears we can see. Their ears may not even be on their heads.
