Water
Tricks Part 1
Make pins float! |
|
You'll
need: large
glass bowl, water, small square of bathroom tissue, straight pin
1. Fill a bowl with water. 2. Very carefully set a piece of tissue in the water. It should float. 3. Gently rest a straight pin on top of the tissue. After a few minutes, the tissue sinks. The pin is left resting on the water's surface. |
How
it works: Water molecules form an extra thick layer at the
surface. This layer acts like a skin. Some objects are light enough to
rest on this skin without sinking. The tissue and the pin are light enough
to float on the water. As the tissue soaks up water, it becomes heavier,
and it ends up sinking.
