Arrival:
Mute swans are native to Europe. They've been kept as pets there for
centuries by royal families. A few pairs of mute swans were shipped
to North America in the early 1900s. In the following years, some escaped
or were let go in the wild. Today, thousands of mute swans live along
the Atlantic Coast (from Massachusetts to Maryland), in Michigan and
in Ontario, Canada.
Attack:
When this alien moves into the neighborhood, ducks and geese beware!
The mute swan's beauty hides a beastly personality. These are the biggest,
toughest members of the waterfowl family...and they don't like to share!
One pair of nesting mute swans often takes over an entire pond or small
lake. They'll drive out any other swansor ducks and geesethat
try to feed or nest on their turf. Biologists worry that mute swans
are hogging homes needed by native waterfowl like the Canada goose and
trumpeter swan.
