More About... Lesson:
A Wild Dream Book
Overview:
Students create a book about animals' dreams and their own dreams.
Curriculum Focus:
Language Arts
Art
Materials:
"Wild Dream" book pages (5 pages)
Old magazines students can cut pictures from and/or drawing materials paper hole punch
yarn
construction paper or other thick paper stock
Materials for older students to research facts about animals in the book
Activity:
Print out the Wild Dream book pages. Make enough photocopies for each student to use. Review the More About... story. Focus on a discussion of dreams. Talk about "good" dreams and "bad" dreams, and how they make students feel. Discuss the drawings of animal dreams at the end of the article. Hand out the Sleeping Animals book pages. Explain that each animal's dream is described in words, and students must draw a picture to show the dream. The last page is for students to share a "good" dream of their own. They can fill in the words, draw or paste in a photo of themselves, and create a picture of their dream. You may wish to give older students extra copies of the last page and challenge them to fill in the blanks with names of additional animals and dreams they might have. In addition, older students can be challenged to include a fact they have researched about each animal on the back of each page of their book. When students are finished with their pages, help them design a front and back cover and bind the book together with yarn. Place students' books on display.
Extension Idea:
Share a fairytale, fable or Native American folktale about sleep or dreams.
